The NESPTM Approach for Pain Management

Determining who should be referred for NESPä Chronic Pain Management

Who IS a candidate for NESPä

  • Any patient who has had pain for greater than 3 months despite treatment

  • Any chronic pain patient who has signs of dependence or addiction to prescription narcotics

  • Refractory chronic pain patients who have failed surgery

  • Refractory chronic pain patients who have “tried everything”

Who is NOT a candidate for NESPä

  • Patients with acute pain (treat these patients aggressively so they don’t become chronic)

  • Patients who have severe primary mental illness

  • Patients who are not motivated to get better (high degree of secondary gain)

  • Patients who are found to be partially or totally malingering (faking or grossly exaggerating signs and symptoms)

  • Patients with cancer pain. In general, CPRG* most cancer pain patients can be treated successfully without being in a chronic pain program

  • Determining who should be referred for a NESPä Chronic Pain Program
